You’re Holy… So Why Are Christians Still Trying to Get Holy?
Grace Uncensored 7 Day Devotional (Episode 47)
Welcome.
This 7-day devotional is designed to walk alongside this week’s Grace Uncensored podcast episode on holiness.
In this episode, we looked at one of the most exhausting forms of Christian double-talk: telling believers they are holy in Christ, but then teaching them to chase holiness as if Jesus has not already set them apart. We talked about how holiness under the New Covenant is not a ladder you climb so God will accept you. It is the fruit of a new identity God has already given you in Jesus.
This devotional is not meant to add more to your plate or give you something else to “keep up with.” It is simply space. Space for grace to land, for truth to settle in, and for pressure to ease off as the week unfolds.
Each day is short and intentional. Read it slowly. Sit with it. Let the message move from your head into your heart. You do not need to rush. Grace works best when we stop striving and start resting.
My hope is that over the next seven days, you will experience less anxiety about where you stand with God, and more confidence in what Jesus has already finished.
You are not trying to become holy so God will accept you.
In Christ, you have already been washed, sanctified, justified, sealed, and set apart as His own.
Day 1
Holiness Begins with Jesus
Scripture
“By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
Hebrews 10:10
Encouragement
Holiness does not begin with your promise to do better. It begins with Jesus’ once-for-all sacrifice. You are not trying to become holy so God will finally accept you. In Christ, God has already set you apart as His own. That means your holiness is not fragile, temporary, or dependent on your performance today.
Reflection Question
Where have I been treating holiness like something I must achieve instead of something Jesus has already made true?
Prayer
Father, thank You that Jesus has made me holy once for all, and help me live today from that finished truth.
Day 2
You Were Washed
Scripture
“But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified…”
1 Corinthians 6:11
Encouragement
Notice the past tense. You were washed. You were sanctified. You were justified. God is not waiting for you to clean yourself up enough to belong to Him. He has already acted in Christ. The Christian life is not about trying to become clean enough for God to stay close. It is learning to live as someone who has already been washed and made new.
Reflection Question
What would change in my daily walk if I truly believed I have already been washed, sanctified, and justified?
Prayer
Lord, renew my mind to believe what You have already done in me through Jesus.
Day 3
Read the Old Through the New
Scripture
“Create in me a clean heart, O God…”
Psalm 51:10
Encouragement
David’s prayer was honest and beautiful under the Old Covenant. But under the New Covenant, believers are not asking God to recreate a clean heart every time they fail so they can stay forgiven or keep the Spirit near. Jesus has already cleansed you, made you new, and sealed you with the Holy Spirit. Psalm 51 can still teach us honesty before God, but we read it through the finished work of Jesus.
Reflection Question
Have I been using Old Covenant language in a way that makes me feel spiritually insecure under the New Covenant?
Prayer
Father, help me read Scripture through the finished work of Jesus and rest in the clean heart You have already given me.
Day 4
Grace Trains You
Scripture
“For the grace of God has appeared… instructing us to deny ungodliness…”
Titus 2:11–12
Encouragement
Grace is not permission to sin. Grace is the environment where sin loses dominion. Fear may change behavior for a little while, but it cannot produce freedom. Condemnation may make you hide, but it cannot make you whole. Grace teaches you who you are, reminds you that you belong to Jesus, and trains you to say no to what no longer fits your new identity.
Reflection Question
Am I trying to change through fear and pressure, or am I allowing grace to train me from the inside out?
Prayer
Jesus, teach me to say no to sin because I know who I am in You.
Day 5
No Condemnation Means No Condemnation
Scripture
“Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 8:1
Encouragement
No condemnation is not a reward for a good spiritual week. It is the reality of everyone who is in Christ Jesus. You are not under condemnation on your bad day, distracted day, weak day, or struggling day. The Holy Spirit does not need condemnation to produce holiness in you. He produces fruit, renews your mind, points you to Jesus, and reminds you who you are.
Reflection Question
Where have I confused the Father’s correction with rejection or condemnation?
Prayer
Father, help me receive Your correction as love, not rejection, and teach me to live free from condemnation.
Day 6
Live According to Your Citizenship
Scripture
“For our citizenship is in heaven…”
Philippians 3:20
Encouragement
Your behavior does not create your citizenship. It expresses it. Just like a passport points to a citizenship that already exists, holiness points to an identity God has already given you in Christ. God is not saying, “Earn your place in My family by acting holy.” He is saying, “You are Mine. You belong to Me. Now live like who you are.”
Reflection Question
Where am I still trying to prove my place in God’s family instead of living from the security that I already belong?
Prayer
Lord, thank You that I belong to You, and help me live today as someone who is already Yours.
Day 7
Holiness Is Grace’s Outcome
Scripture
“And in Him you have been made complete…”
Colossians 2:10
Encouragement
You are not half-built spiritually. You are complete in Christ. You have everything you need for life and godliness because Jesus lives in you. Holiness is not religious image management. It is not pressure, panic, or performance. Holiness is the life of Jesus being expressed through ordinary people who are finally learning they are loved, accepted, sealed, and complete in Him.
Reflection Question
What would it look like this week to stop striving to become acceptable and simply live accepted?
Prayer
Jesus, thank You that I am complete in You, and let Your life be expressed through me today.
Closing Thought
Holiness is not God saying, “Climb higher so I can accept you.”
Holiness is God saying, “You are Mine. You are set apart. You belong to Me. Now live from the life I have already given you.”
You are holy.
You are loved.
You are accepted.
You are complete in Christ.
You are sealed by the Spirit.
And grace is teaching you to live free.
